1 Introduction.
If the processor is the brain of our computers, the hard drive could be considered as its long-term memory. And if the processors evolve permanently, it was different for hard drives for which technology allowed no more big evolutions, put apart the space capacities which don't seem to find any limits. Only solutions as SCSI would allow a small gain in speed and access time.

Now, the use of flash memory and SSD disk (Solid State Disk: hard drive without any moving part), allows a step change in technology, not giving higher transfer rates than hard drives, but way faster access times to data : up to 30 times faster. That gives a better reactivity to the SSD as well as to the whole system. The picture wouldn't be complete if we forgot to speak of the increased reliability of the data support, the reduction of the electrical consumption, of noise and of parasite. We'll have a look at all that in detail.

SanDisk has specialised in Flash memory cards. It forged itself a solid reputation, as years past, in the professional world as the Extreme type cards are amongst the best on the market.
Glossary :
Access time : The time it takes for the disk to find a data and be ready to read it. Under the miliseconde for flash memory, a dozen milisecondes for hard drives and a hundred milisecondes for optical readers.
Compact Flash or CF : CompactFlash (or CF) is a type of memory card used a removable storage unit and mainly used for the storage of numerical pictures in cameras.
RAID 0 : A data repartition system,allowing global performance enhancements.
