5 Conclusion :

If a hard drive as fast as the Maxtor, fitted with reading and writing cache memory and a higher burst speed, is on the breech of being equalled by flash without any cache, that is clearly due to CF very short access times. The hard drive is, here, pushed back to its last limits, within the constraints of its aging mechanisms.

The extreme IV of SanDisk, not meant to run with a Windows on, and still of small capacity, is nevertheless a precursor of a new technology . It has all the reasons to make hard drive constructors shiver.

The new generation of SSD drives from SanDisk, displaying 55Mo/s in reading mode, for capacities up to 60 gigas, should help change things.

In the end, the hard drive keeps its head up, but it's close. It has global performances that are slightly better than SSD, but also has an unbeatable price/capacity ratio.

Eventhough benchmarks go in favour of hard disk drives, reality shows that SSD have nevertheless a very high reactivity.

The SSD technology should rapidly make up for its lack of performance but has many other interesting features : a lower electrical consumption as well as an increased disk reliability. For the time being, capacities and prices are respectively too low and too high, but for how long?
